Caption: Urubamba Market, Cassava, Manihot esculenta is a woody shrub native to South America of the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae. It is extensively cultivated as an annual crop in tropical and subtropical regions for its edible starchy tuberous root, a major source of carbohydrates. Though it is often called yuca in Spanish and in the United States, it differs from yucca, an unrelated fruit-bearing shrub in the family Asparagaceae. Cassava, when dried to a powdery extract, is called tapioca; its fermented, flaky version is named garri.Colourful fruit and vegetables line up alongside large sacks of flour, grain, potatos, sea weed and dried fish which teeter beside rows of slaughtered guinea pig, chicken and beef ready for cooking. this is the farmers' market where locals buy their groceries. Urubamba, possibly from in the Quechua spelling Urupampa, flat land of spiders, is a small town in Peru, located near the Urubamba River under the snow-capped mountain Chicón. Located one hour from Cusco, Urubamba is the largest town in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is also located near a number of significant ruins of the Inca Empire, including Machu Picchu. The sparse remains of the Inca palace, Quispiguanca, are within the town. Tourists often come through the town on their way to visit these sites.Peru, South America, PERU_A037466.jpg
